Carmen Firan*
When this time is over
It will be another time
crueler.
The knife sharpener gets wind under his wings
wheel and fire are reinvented on the spot
distances quietly settle back within their limits
girls jump hoops at the edge of gravity
the old antiquarian strokes his beard facetiously
stuffs his library into a pocket:
what’s not been written can never be read.
everything is pointless, says a blind man,
they’ve lost the key,
locked doors don’t open anymore.
when this time passes, other times follow
history cleans its traps and resets them
for gold prospectors for wanderers in no-man’s land
until a tree sprouts over the heart
time will be entitled to its rights a knife
duller and shorter with every life.

Background music in a summer restaurant
A waitress snoozing at a table looking at a photo
of a child awaiting her
with lights on and ears listening to any sound
resembling steps on stairs.
we should get going but there’s nowhere to go
doors slammed shut, lights flickered
Chairs upside down are an invitation to leave
only there are no tickets left
and all trains are on dead-end tracks
confusion is general
over the centuries the future has been canceled.
this time we’ve returned to stay
to befriend our own memories
So let’s go home. Where’s home now?
an orange leaf floats down from the mulberry tree
our youth drowns in the carafe of wine.

The flight attendant tells me to take my seat
Letter F is at the window, row 33 much farther back.
Please go to your intended place
You had to pay for better seats but all are already taken.
I’m returning home after thirty years
with a passport several times expired but now valid for life
my digital photo looks like a classmate I once had
back then when flower shops sold only plastic mums
and pureed spinach in jars
a false world, only my youth was true.
Through the oval window
the sunset looks like a sweet potato mashed with a fork
the first stars blink on the curved vault
under my horizon of expectation.
No way, says my neighbor in the next seat,
there’re planes, or maybe Musk’s satellites
out for a walk, belly-down, if I may.
At Customs an officer asks me straight:
How long will you stay?
The taxi reaches my childhood street
a stray dog barks in the churchyard.
Don’t put your seatbelt on, says to me,
here everything’s allowed, let it be.
He stops the car and drops me off in front of a pharmacy.
Perhaps he had the wrong address. Where’s the house?
Memories had to be buried, he says,
weeds have overgrown the ruins
home is not the place where you spent the night
home is the time you could be happy on nothing.

Imaginary geographies
If it hadn ’ t been for that morning
In autumn
The incandescent breath
Of the decapitated city
The silence fallen
Like a burgundy curtain
We would have gone on betting
On the long shot
In imagined clashes
In imaginary geographies
Staring at our shadows
Stretching to the absurd
In deceitful mirrors.
The strong are alone
The strong are forlorn
And so vulnerable
In the naïveté to push their dreams
Beyond where
Even they could still follow them
With their sight.
From above everything appears the same:
The dead with the dead
The living with their vanity.
Geografías imaginarias
Si no hubiera sido por esa mañana
En otoño
El aliento incandescente
De la ciudad decapitada
El silencio caido
Como una cortina burdeos
Hubiéramos seguido apostando
En el tiro largo
En enfrentamientos imaginados
En geografías imaginarias
Mirando nuestras sombras
Estirando al absurdo
En espejos engañosos.
Los fuertes estan solos
Los fuertes están desamparados
Y tan vulnerable
En la ingenuidad de impulsar sus sueños
Más allá de donde
Incluso ellos todavía podrían seguirlos
Con su vista.
Desde arriba todo parece igual:
Los muertos con los muertos
Los vivos con su vanidad.

Line up at the gate
Each morning lining up at the gate
My temples explode from the tension
I try to imagine what it’s like to die
In the uproar of the toy pistol
Which can’t kill anyone
But fills everyone with terror.
I crouch at the ready.
The women stare at me curious to find out
Where I aim to go each time
With my syllables awkwardly paired
One with life, one with death
With that light about the eyes
Which, it is reported, is painless,
A kind of happiness invades you
To the last cell, the last word
Frozen on your lips.
Each morning
Lining up at the gate,
The uproar of the toy pistol
Which can ’ t kill anyone
But fills everyone with terror
With repetition ’ s perfection:
The race, the line up at the gate, the race
All the way to insanity.
